WEYMOUTH youngster Max Price’s dreams of a new life with a new kidney have been temporarily dashed.

The brave three-year-old has had to have his new kidney, which was transplanted only two weeks ago, removed after complications following the operation.

Mum Michelle said Max was due to go into surgery yesterday afternoon for the donor kidney to be removed.

Max has been suffering from chronic renal failure for most of his young life and the family thought their prayers had been answered when he was called up to the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London a fortnight ago with news that a donor organ had been secured.

Max’s initial progress post-operation impressed medical staff at the hospital but last week has seen a series of complications and signs that his body had been rejecting the new kidney.

Michelle said: “He was really poorly on Wednesday because what they think has happened is he’s now got three kidneys working together – Max’s two kidneys and the transplant kidney – and between them they all need lots and lots of fluid.

“So they tried to see if they could get enough fluid into him but it’s just not working and it’s something they have got to reverse.

“He was starting to show signs he was really struggling to cope with it.

“We kind of have to grieve now for what we should be having and haven’t got but obviously the main priority now is to get Max fit and get him well and recovered.

“He’s had four big operations in the space of two weeks.”

Michelle said her and Max’s dad Shaun are expecting to go down to Southampton Hospital this weekend with their boy and hopefully get him home some time next week, in time for his birthday next month.

She said: “It’s just not meant to be at the moment and we have got to get our heads round that.

“It’s going to be hard going home because we came here for a reason and we are leaving without that reason.”

Michelle said that Max would eventually go back on the waiting list for another donor organ and the process would start again.

She said: “We will need some time to heal and to be together as a family before we go back into hospital and start doing things again. Long term he will be going back on call and we will be looking for a new kidney, but not just yet.”

Michelle thanked all those who had supported Max and the family over the last two weeks.
