West Dorset Home Watch group praised for its dedication

A Home Watch group in West Dorset has been recognised by Dorset Police for its dedication to the community.

In May 2011, Dorset Police received a petition signed by residents of Rivervale, Bridport, in relation to the high level of anti-social behaviour caused by local youths.

Bridport Town Safer Neighbourhood Team liaised with residents and created a Home Watch group for the area.

Since it was formed, the group has helped reduce trouble in the area.

Regular meetings provide residents with a forum to speak to agencies who can help them, which allows a fast response to problems raised.

The group arranged a community breakfast, a Hallowe’en fancy dress party and a Christmas event.

The lack of a community centre means that events are held at the local Scout Association building.

Magna and Raglan Housing Associations, which own some of the Rivervale properties, have offered to pay for its refurbishment.

In return the association is happy for its premises to be used for events such as bingo and PACT (Partners and Communities Together) surgeries. At the last Home Watch meeting it was stated that over the past six months the estate has changed beyond belief and quality of life has improved beyond recognition.

Residents now take pride in the appearance of their houses because they know that others will respect them.

Safer Neighbourhood Team Sergeant Jon Bleasdale said: “This award gives recognition to an outstanding Home Watch scheme which played a full role in turning around a community that had been living in fear of anti-social behaviour.

“The scheme provided a forum for the community to come together through a series of initiatives and enabling a link to several agencies.”
