THE Area 28 finals have been held with the winners going on to appear in the English National BA finals in Nottingham.

In the singles competition, Martin Puckett of Moonfleet faced fellow club member Dave Ralph with the latter holding a slender 9-8 lead after 12 ends.

At this point Puckett got into his stride, winning eight out of the last nine ends to claim a 21-10 victory.

The pairs section saw a walkover for the Dorchester pairing of Jamie Lockwood and Darren Nutman after fellow county town bowlers Steven Huttley and Alan Tidby pulled out.

In the triples final, both teams were from the Moonfleet club with Mike Gale and the Smith boys, Ed and Marcus, facing their father Dave who was bowling with Chris Cook and Puckett.

The Gale trio took a 17-7 lead after 10 ends but the Puckett three had the better of the latter stages, winning six out of the last eight ends.

However, it was the Gale rink who just held on to take the title 19-18.

In the fours competition, Wellwor-thy’s Graham Reed, Joe Wahnon, Graham Parker and Ryan Stone took on Dorchester’s Robbie Ward, Dean Curtis, Huttley and skip Martin Pavey with the Stone rink taking a 16-5 lead after 11 ends.

The Pavey quartet fought back and the scores were all square at 20 apiece with two ends to play but a three to the Stone rink on the next end proved to be the matchwinner, with the Pavey rink replying with just a two to go down 23-21.

In the mixed pairs showpiece, Moonfleet’s Linda Bryson and Cook faced the Dorchester pairing of Annette and Phil Hallett with the Fleet duo shading the first 15 ends 14-12 and putting in a strong finish to claim the title 21-15.

Dolphin’s Phil Lawrence, Penny Cresswell, Sally Williams and skip Ben Paulley faced Dorchester’s Julie Flatters, Annette Hallett, Jamie Lockwood and skip Darren Nutman in the mixed fours.

The Paulley rink held a slender 11-8 lead after 10 ends before going on to win the title 22-15.

In the under-25s’ singles final, Moonfleet’s Cook faced Tom Warner from Five Rivers and in a tight contest it took a tie-break to decide the winner with Warner taking both ends to bag the crown.

Moonfleet’s Barry Patterson faced fellow club bowler Keith Wyman in the over-60s’ final with the former shading the first 12 ends 8-6.

Patterson then took the next six ends without reply to open up a 12-shot advantage and despite Wyman winning six out of the last eight ends it was Patterson who took the honours 21-15.

In the over-60s’ pairs, the Isle of Purbeck duo of J Rosewarne and L Bentick took on Yeovil’s M Martin and P Colby with the Bentick pairing opening up a useful 16-3 lead after nine ends.

The Colby duo then staged a fight back, closing the score to just four shots by the 13th end, and in a tit-for-tat finish it was the Bentick pair who held on to win 22-17.

In the over-60s’ fours final, Moonfleet’s John Crabb, Pete Read, Ron McCarthy and skip Patterson took on Cliff Higgins, Steve Whitehead, Denny Graydon and skip Graham Standley from the Banister Park Club, with the latter holding a 15-9 lead after 13 ends.

The Patterson rink then fought back to draw level at 17 apiece with two ends to go, only for the Standley rink to pick up a two-shot lead going into the final end.

However, a remarkable three from the Patter-son rink stole the title, 20-19.

Dolphin’s Ron Sparks, Doug Rumble and Steve Gait faced Yeo-vil’s Chris Branson, Brian Colvin and skip David Sutton in the over-50s’ triples with the Gait rink taking a 10-3 lead after 10 ends.

They maintained control throughout the second half to secure victory, 19-8.

In the Champion of Champions, Moonfleet’s Dave Smith faced East Dorset’s Chris Martin with Smith holding the upper hand throughout. He took a 12-6 lead after 12 ends and extended it to 21-11 by the finish to claim the title.
