Family news

WEYMOUTH windsurfer Nick Dempsey has described the new addition to his family as ‘amazing’.

The 31-year-old Olympic bronze medallist has qualified to compete for Team GB this summer at his fourth consecutive Games.

Last week Nick’s wife Sarah, a double Olympic gold medallist sailor, gave birth to their second son, Oscar-Flynn Dempsey, at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester.

Oscar-Flynn shares the same name as his older brother Thomas Flynn Dempsey, who will be three in June.

Proud dad Nick said: “We just like the name and wanted to link the two together.

“It’s amazing, all you ever want is for your baby to come out healthy and so far we’ve got two healthy kids, that’s all anyone can ask for.

“Thomas is getting better and better, he’s the reason I always rush home.

“I think he’ll be trying windsurfing this summer, I hope so.”

This week Nick is training in Cadiz, Spain, ahead of the World Championships on March 21.

Training

WEYMOUTH and Portland churches are being invited to send representatives to a day of Olympic-themed workshops.

A regional training day, organised by Games-inspired charity More Than Gold, will run from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday, March 24, at All Saints School, Wyke Regis.

The event is one of 16 ‘Get Set’ events taking place throughout the UK and 11 workshops will include topics such as how churches can run a community festival, use sport to engage with people of every age, support the Torch Relay, respond to Games-related issues such as homelessness and fair trade, and be inclusive for those with disabilities.

More Than Gold’s UK director Jon Burns, said the event aims to help borough churches ‘play their part’ during Olympic Torch Relay and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.

It costs £10 per person with registration at morethan gold.org.uk/getset
