I refer to letters from Sylvia Jarvis (Echo, April 30) lamenting the condition of planting in the town and why cannot we do as well as Yeovil.

They then give a clue as to why they have not seen the same in Weymouth by saying they have only lived in the town for about a year.

Eighteen months ago Weymouth had four magnificently planted roundabouts.

They were Westham, Kings, Fire Station (now swept away and the replacement traffic scheme has completely unsuitable landscaping) and Manor where a carpet bed was the central feature and has been replaced by what looks like a ploughed field with some twigs poked in.

It seems that Dorset County Council, who have been responsible for what we now have, have a completely different view of what is suitable landscaping to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, which was previously responsible.

Please, if there is any money left give it to Weymouth and Portland’s parks division to do a proper job. It is probably too late for the Olympics but at least we could have something for next year.

The roundabouts at the park and ride car park and at Littlemoor should also receive attention.

If your correspondents want to see the standard of what we previously had go to Chalbury Lodge (Preston end of Littlemoor Road) to see a roundabout which is still maintained by our borough parks division.

The county council could not reach this standard.
