CREATIVE students revamped the fitness suite at their Weymouth school with the help of artist Pete Sheridan.

The pupils painted two large graffiti-style murals on the walls of the gym at Wey Valley School and Sports College on Dorchester Road.

The work was completed over three days and incorporated themes and designs created by students from across the school.

Student Will Hunt said: “It was brilliant fun.

“It was really excellent to work on something different and on such a large scale.

“I’m really proud of my input.”

Fern Boniwell added: “Working alongside a practising artist was a great experience and seeing the artist’s sketchbooks demonstrated the relevance of our own portfolios.

“I wish we could do this all the time.”

The large murals were created with an urban theme and designed to create a contemporary fitness space further promoting the healthy-lifestyle message.

The artist and students worked from ideas and drawings before using aerosols to create the finished murals.

The fitness suite has also updated its equipment with new gym equipment and training bikes.

Wey Valley teacher Dan Emery said: “The art work looks fantastic.

“It was a real collaborative effort and has created a whole new and inspiring place to be.

“It was a fabulous effort by everyone.”

Artist Mr Sheridan said: “It was a real pleasure to work alongside the students.

“They were great and can be really proud of what we achieved together.

“Their work and the mural has completely transformed the space.”

Mr Sheridan, who lives near Dorchester, has also worked with community groups in West Dorset on art projects.

His work has included art works to brighten up the Park District in Weymouth but he has also worked with the Spirit of Bridport community group.

Mr Sheridan attended the Spirit of Bridport launch in February at the town’s arts centre and intends to create a 21st-century version of the town’s iconic Spirit of Bridport painting.

The artwork by Fra Newbery hangs in the town hall.
