THE Spirit of Bridport Festival team is going all-out to tempt international visitors – and ‘staycationers’ – to sample all the town has to offer this summer.

Preparations for the town’s first Festival of Culture are well under way and the word has gone out that for 16 days in August, Bridport will be on show to the world.

The Festival of Culture is the brainchild of Spirit of Bridport, a community collaboration of artists, musicians, community groups, traders and townspeople.

The Dorset Echo-backed festival, from August 11 to 27, will celebrate all aspects of Bridport, from the arts to food, music, the town’s carnival and historic heritage to street theatre and sport.

Organisers hope that visitors to the Olympic sailing events in Weymouth and Portland and to the Jurassic Coast will make a point of experiencing what the spirit of Bridport means.

Festival director Tamsin Chandler said that the Festival of Culture is a true example of collaboration and celebration, involving the entire community.

“What makes our festival truly unique is that the whole town is involved. The entire community of Bridport will work together to showcase the very best they and the town have to offer.

“Festival-goers will wake up each day to a town that’s buzzing, with a diverse range of fantastic things to do, see, learn, hear and eat. It’s a wonderful place to live and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

The Spirit of Bridport team are co-ordinating the festival with a range of partners including Bridport Arts Centre, the Electric Palace, the Lyric Theatre, the Bull Hotel, Eype Church for the Arts, Sladers Yard, the Pierrepoint Gallery, the Salt House West Bay, Marsh Barn, the Chapel in the Garden and St Michael’s Studios.

Co-chairman of the Spirit of Bridport Ros Kayes said: “We know that many people will be holidaying in the UK this year and we would like them to visit our beautiful heritage coastline and come and experience the brilliant arts, food and music events we have on offer – all packed into a 16 day series of events.”
