TWO teachers at Dorchester schools have been shortlisted for a regional award that celebrates the best in digital education.

Gary Spracklen, acting assistant headteacher at Prince of Wales First School, and Richard Scott, media development manager at Thomas Hardye Academy, have both been shortlisted for the 2012 Digital Educator Awards.

The award celebrates the best in teaching and learning using educational technology from across the South West.

Mr Spracklen said: “It is an honour for both Richard and myself to be recognised in this way at such a high level.

“We place a big emphasis on ICT within the Dorchester Area Schools Partnership and for a long time we have collaborated effectively to ensure outstanding ICT provision across the partnership.”

The pair recently worked together with pupils to reach the final of the National Teaching Awards ‘Film My School’ competition.

Mr Spracklen has been shortlisted for his work to inspire his colleagues to embrace and apply new technologies to support, engage and develop all pupils, including those with severe physical disabilities.

His work highlights how new technologies have transformed pupils’ learning and left a lasting impact in pupils lives.

Mr Scott has been shortlisted for his work using animation as a motivator and aid to information retention, in students who are not always highly motivated.

He said: “The animation projects have given us a superb opportunity to observe the students working on potentially difficult concepts,.

“The process of the animation has allowed every student to shine.

“It has been inspirational to see quiet students lead the planning, preparing, filming or editing phases.

“They have worked methodically and creatively to achieve a learning resource they are proud of.”

The awards ceremony will take place in Plymouth on Tuesday, July 3.
