SPIRIT Live 87.7fm radio station broadcasting from Weymouth College is making waves.

The station is providing live interactive broadcast coverage of Weymouth and Portland’s Spirit of the Sea Maritime Festival by students from Weymouth College, Bourne-mouth University and Chesil Education Partnership Secon-dary Schools.

The studio was opened last year and students are producing content on their own with the help of Weymouth College lecturers.

Returning students are revisiting the college since embarking on university degrees especially to be a part of the station again.

Budding radio presenters are broadcasting live each day from 9am to 10pm and will continue until July 15.

Alongside a mix of popular music, students have been conducting live interviews from the festival organisers, visitors and guests as well as conducting phone-in interviews from the events going on in and around the area each day.

Radio manager Julian Watkins said: “The students are really enjoying it and it has been a fantastic opportunity for students to get real radio experience. It’s been fantastic that the students are so involved and they are getting a chance to interview famous people and reporting on Olympic activity.”

The same students who are currently working for Spirit Live will be returning to 87.7fm to host the unofficial Olympic radio station called Weymouth Live that will be covering the cultural events around Weymouth and Portland from July 25 to August 12.

Julian would like to thank the Jeremy Pope Foundation and Weymouth College for donating funds that helped buy the radio equipment.

The station is really keen to initiate using more local bands or musicians to help get their original music out there over the Olympic period.

Julian said: “We want as much local content and contributors as possible as we’re trying to make a really strong local station to promote everything about the Jurassic coast.

“We want the local community to be as involved as possible.”
