THE sun was a welcome visitor as Weymouth Cougars brought the curtain down on their 2011/12 campaign with a fun day and annual presentation at the Willowbed Hall in Chickerell .

Despite initially fearing a washout following the recent wet weather, the event once again proved a huge success with several hundred people in attendance.

Cougars’ chairman Al Newman spoke of the triumphs both on and off the pitch, and the marvellous efforts of the fundraising teams with a special message of thanks going out to all the sponsors whose continued support remains crucial in terms of the club’s ongoing stability.

He said: “Fundraising is the lifeblood of any amateur organisation and many people have given up their spare time to help with the various events throughout the year.”

Special tributes were paid to Maggie Hallett for her contribution via her bingo night and to all those who helped make this year’s Summer Sixes another outstanding success.

Newman also pointed out how many people during the course of the season had contributed to the club’s success before going on to thank all the players, parents, managers and many helpers for their efforts.

The awards were presented to those individuals who had achieved personal excellence but the contributions from their team-mates were also recognised as the Cougars continue to measure success by the number of youngsters playing and enjoying their Sunday football within the club.

Four trophies were awarded to each team and medals were awarded to all who represented the club during the campaign, including all of the mini kickers who will hopefully form the nucleus of Cougars’ league teams for many years to come.

Every year a special trophy is also kindly donated by the parents of the late, and sadly missed, John Clarke. The recipient of this year’s outstanding achievement award was Nina Samways.
