Blame games as traders claim business harmed by Olympics
11:30am Tuesday 31st July 2012 in News
Few people on Weymouth’s quayside
TRADERS claim they are losing up to 50 per cent of their business as visitors shun the Olympics in Weymouth and Portland .
Organisers predicted an extra 30,000 visitors a day flocking into the resort during the Sailing events – but the town has been much quieter than anticipated.
There are now claims that the predictions of congestion – with warning signs as far away as Southampton and Bristol warning motorists of delays – have scared people away.
The signs have now been changed to: ‘Weymouth 2012 games No Delays’ in a bid to get more people to come.
Park and Ride sites at Monkey’s Jump and Kingston Maurward, with a combined capacity of 5,235 have stood virtually empty at times.
Businesses away from the beach claim that people have deserted the town and hat they are struggling after a dreadful summer so far.
The Bayside Festival has slashed entry fees and the price of tickets for evening concerts in a bid to boost numbers.
But the council and traders say there is still time to turn it around and people are being encouraged to get the message out via social networks.
Margaret Turner, of Seacrest Guesthouse, said: “It has been terrible so far. About 75 per cent of my rooms are empty. I think people are staying away, not just because of the Olympics, but because of the recession.
“They need to stop telling people to stay away. The adverts saying how busy it is are not helping.”
David Harris, of the fruit stall in St Mary Street, said: “Business has been rubbish. It’s not that people aren’t visiting, because they are. But they are not spending in town.
“It is tight at the moment and people are watching the pennies. There is nothing the council can do. They have got people here, and they can’t force them to spend money.”
Jane Germon, of Queen of Hearts newsagents and gift shop, St Alban Street, said: “It has been disastrous.
“They have told people to stay away and not use their cars and that is what people are doing.
“It is too late now to improve the situation now. It is a shame because the Olympics was hyped up so much.”
Gordon Clarke, manager of Seas the Moment seafood shop near Hope Square, said: “We are not doing well at all.
“It is nothing exceptional, the Olympic Sailing has not benefited us at all.
“It is the quietest it has been in Weymouth in years at this time of year.
“The road system in place doesn't work and locals aren’t coming down because they can’t park anywhere.”
"More visitors are expected"
LOCAL Olympic organisers refused to be drawn on why their estimates of the number of visitors were so wide of the mark.
And they wouldn’t comment on the concerns raised by traders that their trade was down by around 50 per cent. They issued a statement claiming that more than 11,000 people watched the opening
ceremony on Weymouth beach and Weymouth and Portland have received an unprecedented level of global media coverage.
They said: “With the Olympic medal races still to begin, more visitors are expected to arrive to enjoy a unique seaside experience.”
Dorset Olympic Board chairman Angus Campbell said: “The transport system has been working well. Transport plans do have to cover every eventuality and be flexible enough to cope with large numbers
of visitors. However, we and our transport partners are responding to local concerns about visitor numbers by promoting the various options for getting to Weymouth and Portland.
“There is capacity on both the road and public transport networks, so I’d encourage people to come and enjoy the Olympic atmosphere.”
A spokesperson from the Highways Agency added: “It became clear over the weekend that traffic was running smoothly on all routes into Dorset and as a result the Highways Agency reacted quickly by
changing the messaging to advise there were no delays.”

There is no point in trying to distribute too much blame - most of us were over the moon when we knew Weymouth had won the Olympics.
Where blame can be attached is to our local Authorities; for the idiotic and insensitive way the TWO YEARS of roadworks were carried out, which has already devastated a number of businesses beyond the point of no return; and for the imbecility of allowing the message to be propagated that Weymouth was going to be inaccessible this summer. 30,000 visitors a day - was there really anybody who believed this? And even if it were true, it would not have replaced the thousands of lost ordinary visitors.
The Sailing Olympics are wonderful and I am proud to see it happening in my home town, but there is going to be a lot of pain and a lot of recrimination afterwards.

Neither are my friends who visit Weymouth on a regular basis either.

I can confirm that I, a regular holiday maker to Weymouth, have not been put off by the Olympics - I have just spent five days in the town with a friend, and am back next Saturday for two weeks with my family.

I was picking up people saying they cant afford to go abroad no more so they have a holiday in the country. As for what the olympics has done to a cabbie in particular well lets put it this way, would you be busy if you were STOPPED from working. We have no ranks, well we have 1 outside the crown, only allowed to have 3 cars on it!!! there are 80 hackney vehicles in the town. Its been an absolute shambles from the get go. I did one job from the crown hotel to prince regent and it went £10.80, on our official paper work about the road closures we were told we can use Glocuester street to drive up to drop off on the seafront, but no they changed it last min to fully closed, so just to get to the Prince Regent i had to go all way to morrisons and back down again!! Its absolutely disgusting the way the locals have been treated during all this, sickening is also a word that comes to mind.
Today there is a lot less disposable income in peoples pockets, therefore you can't compare to what is was like before improvements to the town.

Weymouth has always been a bucket and spade seaside town but it has been going down hill for years and now they have deterred their usual clientele by holding the Olympics and there is a good chance they won't come back, as for cost you can go to many European destinations cheaper than a holiday in Weymouth so anybody that thinks a holiday anywhere in the U.K. is cheap is deluded. Weymouth needs to return to its roots as a quaint little seaside town and get rid of the drunks and tramps and make it a real old fashioned family holiday town again.

Shame about businesses in Weymouth, all those promises of '30,000 visitors' a day from the olympic organisers and the council. Doesn't take a genius to work out that '30,000 visitors a day' is just not a realistic figure (as now proven)

The cost of all these buses, personnel and security that are gaurding the park and ride routes must be staggering, based on what I've seen it would have been cheaper to give a free Taxi voucher to each park and ride customer. The diesel alone must go into the thousands for all those buses driving back and forth empty!

The road and car parking closures have meant that people are simply not coming into town leaving the harbour area like a ghost town for this time of year. I feel for all the local shops in town and on the beach that are losing a fortune due to all the restrictions etc.
Too much of the beach has been taken over, made even worse by the hideous, restrictive, blue meshing.
The live site is closer to dead than alive. Why did they just not have live music and food available here, people would have just concentrated in one area and it would have been FREE. I'm not in the least surprised that the Bayside Festival has slashed its prices, it's just a glorified market.
Who dreamt up the 30,000 visitors, the Nothe is only ticketed for 4,600 or so. The FREE spaces around the fort and Stone Pier are not exactly heaving!!
The town was busy for the opening ceremony because the weather was great, the live site had something LIVE to see, and there were the fireworks (after which most people left).
Get the BBC to mention on prime time that Weymouth is not horrendous to get to so come on down. AND please open some of the roads and get people in again, another week of poor grading will cripple local traders who are struggling big time already......

At the time, more grounded people were drawing comparisons with Athens, where traditional tourists were deterred by the spectre of hordes coming to see the Olympics, and the hordes - if they ever existed, forecast numbers apparently being plucked from thin air - deterred by price increases.
Looking at London's empty shopping streets, and Weymouth and Portland's reduced summer visitors, it's plain to see that the lessons of history were ignored....
In this area, perhaps there was a degree of wilful ignorance, given that the Olympics were used as an 'unofficial' reason for the Relief Road and it's accompanying sculptures.
On the plus side, the town has been smartened up, and the traffic-restricted areas of town are a joy.
Both should become part of the Olympic legacy, and perhaps a basis for making Weymouth a more desirable / upmarket holiday resort.

First off there was the utility pipe replacements - fair enough lots of grief but we all benefit in the long term, but the rush was on as they had to finished by the Olympics.
Secondly there was the ridiculous Weymouth Transport Fiasco, which involved replacing functioning roundabouts with traffic lights when the main hold ups on the route were actually caused by the existing traffic lights in Kings St. This SCOOT idea was first mooted by DCC in the 90s and rejected until DCC came up with a Public Transport Improvement package agreed by the then Labour Government, which DCC insisted they could only deliver if the junctions were controllable, ie SCOOT in by the back door. Even then it was only when the ODA? demanded a high speed link between the Olympic Sites that the controllable traffic light option was highlighted and used to get a bit of Olympic funding that the scheme became financially viable. It was put in as an Olympic requirement but in actual fact had very little to do with the Olympics. The WTF did untold damage to the well being of the town in the name of the Olympics, but as we can see it has not done anything beneficial for the Olympic traffic.
Now we have the ridiculous road closures which have split the town in half. There is still much in-fighting going on with one lot saying the road is open the other lot keeping it closed with different "lots" involved at different locations.
Over the years we have run music events on the beach and harbourside where local musicians have given their performances freely. One thing of note is that the people of Weymouth do not turn up to spectate if the cost is too high, so who thought that they would fill up at £10 per head to see copycat acts obviously did not ask around locally first.
How did the organisers not notice the complete lack of congestion during any of the Sail for Gold events that had 3 times the participants of the actual Olympics?
We have the blind (DCC/WPBC) leading the blind (ODA) with neither sure as to who is actually leading or where they were going.
My money is on the fact that 4000 tickets were available daily for this area for the 15 days of the competition giving rise to 60000 possible extra spectators, and that this 60000 figure was assumed to be a daily figure and when it was discovered it was not, noone would own up and so have perpetuated the myth.
As far as I am aware we have a fairly hard time filling Weymouth with the high parking charges on a normal summer, the beaches are nowhere near as packed as they were when parking was freely available, so what planet do these strangers come from where increasing the cost astronomically leads to more take up?
the sooner someone takes a stand and admits that it is crippling the town and opens up the link between the esplanade and commercial road the sooner we can get back to normality.
I still think this site needs a preview button!

Here's and interesting fact. The drivers that drive the new and empty double deckers are earning £140 a day and staying at hotels in Poole and Bournemouth. Local Weymouth and Portland hotels are not good enough it seems.
Which is why I reckon a RESPONSIBLE council should act now - come up with a plan as to how many buses are needed for the crowd sizes (I reckon less than 5,000), open all the town to traffic except the prom from Kings Statue to the Pavillion, reduce car park and park & ride fees to pre-Olympic prices (though do I understand from Wessex FM that Monkey Jump is free from tomorrow?) and get sign to display that there is more than adequate parking in the town and restrictions have been lifted.
They might still rescue what I now reckon is close to a disaster.

Heads must roll. The only person to come out of this with any credit is John Tweed, CEO of the National Sailing Academy, who has achieved magnificently.
We should ask him to run the whole of Dorset and throw out these incompetent numpties, both councillors and WPBC/DCC executives.

Let alone them closing the seafront completely where our taxi rank is, there is quite a few ppl up that way in the day, we would actually get a little business. But of course, that would be too much thought for local businesses to allow something like that.

With the millions that have been spent, it's no surprise that the handful of visitors feel the system is running efficiently. The ambassadors are great, but there are clearly a lot more than necessary. I assume they are volunteers.

ry disappointing for the local traders as they were probably hoping the Olympics would turn their trade around. What about all the locals who were going to let their houses for thousands of pounds every week???? I think it`s quite embarassing for the organisers as well....it`s like having a party and nobody going to it. Shame. Everthing has been overpriced and let`s face it sailing is and never will be a spectator sport. Why anyone would want to pay £70 plus to sit at the Nothe and stare at a load of white sails miles out to sea baffles me........I`m sure things will pick up post Olympics.

As for the "relentless malcontent" referred to by Captain Sensible, I have been saying for four years that the event was being overhyped, not because of some ideological fanaticism, but because experience from Sydney, Beijing, Vancouver - all f which is well documented in academic sources, says that the return on investment is negligible and for satellite towns, negative. As one paper put it, when asked to name the town that hosted the sailing events in the 2004 Olympics, not one person in a hundred asked could do so. They had to pander to Olympic activity, but their plan started many years ago. Why would you pay £4 to park and buy some second hand clothes? Thank goodness my Wife's shop closed last year, it would have been double the debt if we had kept going..
For months & months before the Olympics arrived the council has made life difficult for residents & businesses alike, major road works, ridiculous traffic systems (Asda - not to mention their ridiculous car park too), high parking charges, cutting of 1 hour free parking places, extortionate rents & cost cutting inappropriately (Weymouth Harbour - (who the heck didn't monitor that breadwinner !!) Condor has gone & I'm pretty positive they will avoid coming back especially due to the high complaints of problems getting cars off in the peak of summer because of the system of narrowing along the Esplanade. I loved Weymouth, pretty little seaside town, ruined by it's council, I like many have been driven to shop elsewhere & won't be coming back until the road, parking systems change. Shops were pulling out long before the Olympics, high rents, on-line shopping & the recession not helping but also accessibility. Don't blame the Olympics WPBC & DCC were already on a suicidal path. Support Bring back the Old Weymouth yes! Bring back free parking, make access easier, drops rents, that way the people will come back, it will take time though & for Weymouth the sand is running low.... Most people I know are in the same mind, it's only worth coming to Weymouth to get your hair done! And no I'm not moaning I'm being realistic....

The trouble is most of the traders I know only look out for themselves and only come together to gang up on someone else, shame really.
Too many of our Councillors for far too long have been working on their own agendas instead of the community benefit. The best legacy they could have left was to 'invent' 1,000 jobs that were sustainable forever. In a town like this where it relys heavily on seasonal employment, a legacy of 1,000 sustainable jobs would have been something to have been proud of. The money they have wasted could have done 3 times that. If they had any decency they would resign and let someone with a bit more get up and go take over!

It's such a shame, the facilities and entertainments in place are awesome and the council should be congratulated for that, but those officials that failed to do even basic research, and especially those who were stupid enough to tell hoteliers and other businesses that they could charge what they wanted during the Olympics (and in doing so make it clear to the world that Weymouth was ready to fleece everybody it could) should be forced to suffer the same financial misery they have inflicted on others with their arrogance and stupidity.
We are where we are so we must make sure we try to enjoy every minute of this amazing event - it's come at a hell of a price!

Catamarans are more efficient the faster they go, hence speed is important and the longer run into Poole eats into profits. They will be back.
annotator1 wrote:Well I heard a rumour that Condor had intended to run viewing trips during the Olympics, WPBC got wind of it & said no. Condor was also told it couldn't run the boat out when sailor were competing. The harbour has been dodgy for years, unpainted, unkempt, cafe closed even though there has been interested parties in running it, they've been told no. Condor coming back - I very much doubt it, they said the Navy would never leave - they did ! As for financial loss Brittany Ferries manage quite well out of Poole/Plymouth. There the councils are open minded.
Taxpayinglocal wrote:That sums it up, in a nut shell. Why ever would a competent council allow the loss of a Nationally Used Service?
Theres a new conspiracy going round, isnt it funny how the Condor left just months before the olympics, and how apparently the docks never got repaired when they had plenty of time to do so, im saying this because, where would all the condor traffic go once it comes off the boat with roads closed all day and car park full of that fetisval crap, was this a delibrate ploy to make the condor leave so they didnt have to worry about this condor traffic.
Condor has been running out of Poole long before they couldn't in Weymouth, we've booked via Brittany Ferries several times over the last few years & been placed on a Condor Vessel out of Poole. Easier to get to France (no lengthy crossovers at Guernsey/Jersey) my money is on a non-return, the amount of complaints Condor has recieved over the lack of facilities & traffic access on & off the boat in Weymouth have been phenominal (Trust me I know) plus the Harbour fees in Weymouth are higher.

I have also created the publicity for musical events, leading to sell-out performances.
Whilst the result of the Bay Festival is unfortunate, I would ask the question that bearing in mind I live not more than 40 minutes from Weymouth – why did I not even hear about this festival?
The overriding PR message emanating from Weymouth pre ‘The Games’ has been that exclusive corporate sponsorship has clearly attempted to prevent local businesses from profiting from ‘The Games’ and that both locals and tourists would have to pay through the nose in order to even see an Olympic competitor.
This leads to cynicism in the minds of the public.
Whilst areas may be available to view ‘The Games’ for free, it has not been in the organisers’ interests to promote these, and I would guess they are therefore largely unknown outside the local community.
With ‘The Games’ now viewed simply as an exclusive franchise by many, exclusivity by its very nature… excludes, and therefore perhaps we should not be so surprised at the result.
To my mind, the combination of perceived overcharging (for a park and ride for example), combined with the message that tourists should not visit due to congestion and lack of parking is a ‘perfect storm’ of PR mismanagement.
It would seem to me that the last time Weymouth had such a PR issue, it was down to The Plague, which of course is a great pity since Weymouth has much to offer.
I look forward to visiting again myself when it is possible to park, take in the atmosphere and enjoy a reasonably inexpensive day out with the family.

Perhaps we could retain a few ambassadors to guide the visitors around, they are probably much more useful on the streets than a hidden Tourist Information Office.
We could even run a free or low cost bus along the front and round by the harbour so visitors could get around more easily.Happy tourist in my experience linger and spend money.
The Radio ! road show used to be very successful on the beach (we should have something for the youngsters). Is it a case of getting the right entertainment at the right price?

Well - we've certainly got community spirit over this, anyway - even if it is mostly negative. Yes, people have been put off coming during the Olympics - by the transport organisation; by some ridiculous hotel prices; and - by Weymouth's unrelenting whinging! For God's sake! We have the most wonderful town and Island in the World - and now the Greatest Show on Earth has come to Weymouth and Portland! Stop whinging Weymouth and take a lesson from our Olympians - if an Olympian falls during a race, they don't just stand there and look around for someone to blame THEY GET UP AS FAST AS THEY CAN AND RUN FASTER THAN EVER TO TRY AND WIN THE RACE! That's what we have to do now. Tell everyone how wonderful Weymouth and Portland are! Smile and WELCOME our visitors! If we are not overrun we have a golden opportunity to give them the holiday of a lifetime and the welcome and service they deserve. Welcome the World to our wonderful Town! Imaginebooks

It's not as if many of us weren't warning about these consequences years ago. The local councillors and executives at DCC/WPBC have been blinded by the glory they saw coming their way.
If one of our athletes had failed to train, follow the advice of his/her coach, eat sensibly and then got disqualified for a false start, we wouldn't call it whinging, we'd say they got what was inevitably coming to them and that is what has happened with the idiots who have mismanaged this opportunity.
There have to be severe consequences for this failure. That is the only way that democracy can work. The failure goes very, very deep though. The mistakes are inexcusable and could have been avoided.
We need a public inquiry and I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a case for some criminal prosecutions.

I don't believe it!! The stage on the live site has gone and all we are left with are 2 big screens. Why on earth is all the beach still closed and turnstiles in place. Put a few fences around the base of the screens, stick some security guards around the fences and let the public freely go up and down the beach. What a total waste to be left with nothing but 2 screens on the beach. I despair!! All this talk of people saying that Weymouth should grasp the Olympics and show the town off for the world to see..... Is this the best we can come up with....

So the Dorset Evening Echo is joining forces with olympic organisers to spread the word that down here in Weymouth and Portland is the place to be?! Funny that because the Echo have done nothing but produce negative headlines from the start! The Echo is a disgrace and no wonder people aren't coming down because potential visitors are googling olympic sailing and finding your shambolic headlines! You should be encouraging people, not scaring them off! As for certain hoteliers who are struggling.....well maybe you shouldn't have been so greedy by putting prices up by double in some cases and waiting for your big corporate bookings which blatantly wasn't going to materialise! Also the signs in other counties saying "long delays etc" was ridiculous! Why put them up when we had a new road to deal with the supposed influx of holiday makers! Get down to Weymouth if you can and forget about the negative comments coming from some locals! There's plenty to do!
