DORSET’S Match Race Girls admitted it was a ‘massive relief’ after booking a quarter-final showdown.

The Poole trio of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor will be going up against Russia in the Elliott 6m keelboat event at the Olympic sailing regatta tomorrow.

The Macgregor sisters and Lush progressed through to the knockout phase of the London 2012 Women’s Match Racing event despite slipping to defeat against their final round robin opponents, Netherlands and USA, on the Nothe course on Saturday.

The Brits, who are seeded seventh, will now face the second seed Russian team of Ekaterina Skudina, Elena Syuzeva and Elena Oblova, who defeated the Brits in the round robin last Wednesday.

But they insist that after a couple of rest days they will be ready to ‘start afresh’ in the quarter-finals.

Helm Lucy Macgregor, 25, said: “It’s a big relief really to make it through, we’re able to wipe away last week and start afresh on Tuesday.”

Crew Lush, 32, added: “We’ve raced Ekaterina a lot, she used to sail the Yngling so we’ve raced her many, many times. She’s been on form here but she’s been up and down in the past.

“She’s going to be a tough competitor but we’ve raced and beaten her many times, we can do that again.”

The Match Racing quarter finals, held tomorrow and Wednesday, will involve ‘the best of five’ competitions, in which the top four of the eight teams will make it through to Friday’s semi finals.
