WEST Bay Day is coming back to life this weekend with an event designed to coincide with the closing of the Olympics .

Formerly known as Traders’ Day, this Sunday, August 12, will see the revival of the event, designed to bring music, fun and plenty of donations for the RNLI.

The day, which starts at 1pm, will be geared to a nautical theme with entertainment for all ages including crabbing, a bouncy castle and a pirates fancy dress competition for children.

And the event will close with a dramatic light festival with candles being lit along the pier at 9pm and dancing into the night.

Local musician Chris Deacon has joined forces with local councillor Gillian Summers and harbourmaster James Radcliffe to organise the day.

The St Swithun’s Silver Band start the music by playing to the sailing out of the cruise ship Balmoral on her voyage along the Jurassic coast.

A wide variety of performers have responded to the call to entertain around the harbour, on the mound and on the greens, featuring more than 60 musicians. There will be an open air ceilidh with two dance sessions on the Green, featuring one of the South West’s premier ceilidh bands Arish Mel and caller Alan Twelfthtree Alongside duo Bosuns Call, and shanty group The Wareham Wailers, local musicians include Tinker’s Cuss, Shiraz, Branded Men, Le Rooster, Val and Dave and Rock Bottom.

The evening will end with dancing on the pier during a final four hour session by popular local band The Vinyl Monkeys and K2.

Chris Deacon, an ardent supporter and fundraiser for the RNLI said: “We have worked hard to bring this West Bay Day to fruition in such a short time, but we are confident of its success, the beneficiaries of which will be the RNLI. So we invite people to come and enjoy and support this spectacular event.”
