WEYMOUTH’S Saskia Clark admits the British 470 Women are bidding for a golden post box as they head into the business end of their London 2012 Olympic regatta.

World Champions Clark and Hannah Mills scored finishes of fifth and second yesterday to sit four points behind leaders Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie, of New Zealand.

The Weymouth pair have a three-point advantage over Dutch sailors Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout, who are currently in third place.

Clark, 32, said: “We’re happy with our day; in terms of the fleet, three of us have pulled quite clear, there are two more fleet races to go before the medal race.

“It’s probably going to be a three-way scrap with the Dutch and Kiwis. Are we confident of having a golden post box in our home town? That’s the goal.”

She added: “We’d be happy to go into the medal race with a chance of winning.

“That course has shown if you’ve got that you’re alright, and anything can happen.”

Helm Mills, 25, competing at her first Olympics , said: “The past year and a half it’s been a really big strength of ours to come back through the fleet really well.

“We’re good at staying calm and picking away the boats – we don’t do anything drastic like some of the other boats.

“We’re one of the most consistent boats out there.

“The Kiwis are very similar to us, they remain calm and conservative and are good at picking the boats off; the Dutch have a lot of experience.”

The women’s 470 fleet will hold their ninth and 10th races on the Portland Harbour course from noon today, their final events before Friday’s double-point battle for the podiu
