A WEYMOUTH couple will be holding a night of music, raffles and Cambodian cuisine to help raise funds for an orphanage.

Angie and Alan Briggs, of Chickerell Road, have organised a music night at the Royal Portland Arms to raise money for the orphans and disabled arts orphanage in Cambodia.

The music night will take place on Saturday, August 18 at 5 pm.

As well as a fundraising raffle, local musicians will be performing, including Paul Openshaw, who is donating the profits from the first 200 sales of his CD.

The Royal Portland Arms, Fortuneswell , will be providing a Cambodian supper and are also donating 20 percent of all profits from the bar.

The event is free and the money raised will go towards providing the orphanage with food and other supplies.

Mr and Mrs Briggs came across ODA orphanage in the village of Sras Srang on a round-the-world trip they took in 2009 when Mr Briggs retired from the fire service.

The couple also raised more than £1,000 for the orphanage at their garden party in July.

Mrs Briggs said: “We will be going out to Cambodia next year in March and helping the children with their art projects. We want to deliver the money personally and work with the children again.”

ODA orphanage is in need of donations as it receives no government funding and relies mainly on selling the children’s paintings.

Mrs Briggs said the owner, Leng Touch, tried to make it feel like a family home.

Mr Touch was orphaned as a young boy and so he offers the children much needed support as well as educating them in English and art.

Mrs Briggs said: “It was an amazing experience and some things like that just stay with you so when we got back we wanted to raise some money to help them.”

The couple will also be holding a fundraising barn dance on September 22 at Girt Hall, St George’s Centre, Portland.
