ADVENTUROUS young sailors endured hours on the high seas to raise funds for a Weymouth charity.

The group of 12 youngsters from Weymouth Sailing Club’s YOBs (Youth On Boats) raised around £800 for the Will Mackaness Trust through an all-day sponsored sail around Weymouth Bay.

Despite some very high winds in the morning and no wind by the evening, the youngsters sailed in shifts and were able to keep sailing until 9pm.

Pam Govier, who helped set up the Trust in memory of her late son Will Mackaness, visited the young sailors to wish them luck.

She said: “I’m delighted that the Trust is having its profile raised in this way and that the young people who were taking part were having fun and enjoying taking part.”

The Trust gives youngsters from all backgrounds a chance to try watersports and nurtures talent by offering financial support.

Cadet captain Emma Stevenson said: “I’m very pleased with how the day went. We hope to have raised more than £800 so that other young people can benefit from the work of the Trust. We’d like to thank everyone who sponsored us, those at Weymouth Sailing Club who supported us, the safety boat crews, and all the cadets who took part who were absolutely fantastic.”
