TWO men have been seriously injured after a powerboat flipped over during a race in Weymouth Bay.

The horror accident happened during the final race of a national powerboat racing championship finale which was held in Weymouth for the first time this weekend.

Organisers said a powerboat driver and navigator suffered serious injuries in the accident this afternoon.

They have been airlifted to hospital by helicopters.

One was taken to the beach where the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance was waiting. The other man was taken aboard Weymouth Lifeboat then winched onto the Portland Coastguard helicopter.

Organisers of the P1 SuperStock UK Championship have cancelled the race.

A section of the Esplanade was closed while the incident was dealt with and is now open again.
