Fedoras, fezzes, fascinators and the just plain fantastical made Bridport an official Hat Zone for the town’s third Hat Festival.

Locals and visitors from across the world thronged the streets wearing titfers from the chic to the crazy – and anyone not wearing a hat felt out of place as the town went millinery mad.

And at 12.30pm on Saturday Bucky Doo Square was jam-packed with an estimated 10,000 mad hatters who doffed their caps, bowlers, toppers, trilbys and towering home-made creations in unison in the mass hat photo-shoot.

It was headwear fresh out of the oven for bakers Glenn Berwick and Peter Benn of Punch and Judy bakery in Bridport, who baked their bread hats on festival morning.

Glenn said after a premature crumbling of last year’s creation he used his loaf and made the wide-brimmed crown in one piece. Peter said he would eat his hat – later in the pub.

From the weird to the wonderful, all ages took part, with hat-making workshops for youngsters to a hat related storytime in the library.
