Rings to find new home on Portland

Weymouth and Portland’s Olympic stone rings are to go on display on Portland as a lasting reminder of the Games legacy.
The rings will overlook the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy when they are placed at the top of the island tomorrow afternoon.
They will be placed at New Ground to give visitors a view of the backdrop of Chesil Beach, the Sailing academy, the sailing waters, the Nothe and Weymouth Bay.
Ten Portland youngsters, the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Margaret Leicester and the Mayor of Portland Sylvia Bradley will unveil the rings at 4pm tomorrow.
They were positioned outside Weymouth Railway Station during the Olympics.
The rings were carved  out of Portland limestone specially for the Games by local craftsmen at AS Quarries.
Borough council leader Mike Goodman said: “It is really good news the iconic Olympic Rings will be back on display overlooking the spot where many of our Olympic and Paralympic dreams came true.
“Portland played a huge role in delivering a successful Games and these rings will allow us to cherish the memories of hosting the sailing right here in our wonderful borough of Weymouth and Portland.”
