PORTLAND Coastguard received a report of distress signals near Purewell, Christchurch, yesterday evening.
Fortunately a member of the coastguard team reported Chinese lanterns in the same area.
A coastguard spokesman said users should inform them before lighting Chinese lanterns to prevent false alarms.
