Upgrade will mean a smoother ride for cyclists
10:30am Monday 24th September 2012 in News
CYCLISTS and mobility scooter users in Weymouth will soon be having a smoother ride into the town centre.
Dorset Highways is upgrading the existing shared cycleway and footpath between Swannery Bridge and Chafey’s Roundabout next to Radipole Lake from a gravel track to a paved surface.
Project manager Emma Baker said: “This section of cycleway is an important link in Weymouth and Portland ’s cycling network; it will join up Chickerell , the Granby, Southill , Westham and Weymouth town centre.
“Providing a paved surface will make it an easier journey for walkers and cyclists, and it will also ensure better access for residents who use mobility scooters.”
Mrs Baker added: “Due to the nature of the surfacing works we will have to close the route for about five days starting on Monday October 8.
“An alternative route will be signposted, unfortunately it will be a significantly longer route via Goldcroft Road, Newstead Road, Abbotsbury Road and Westham subway.”
This week work will begin to clear vegetation and treat weeds to return the width of the trail to 2.3 metres.
