PEOPLE gathered to mark the 80th anniversary of a submarine tragedy which took place off the coast of Dorset.

The M2 submarine sank 80 years ago this year off Chesil Beach.

She was the first submarine to carry a biplane that could land and take off from the deck.

In the tragedy all her crew and two airmen died – it is believed that the hanger doors opened early and the vessel took on water.

Three boats, including the charity vessel MV Freedom went out with a group of divers to lay wreaths on the site, which is a dedicated war grave.

Mark Bowditch from MV Freedom said: “Due to the bad weather they had to turn round.”

Instead, a service was held on land and the  wreath laying will be rescheduled.
