WEYMOUTH has been voted one of the top holiday destinations in the country.

The resort was one of the top four finalists in the category of Best UK Resort, alongside Great Yarmouth, Blackpool and Bournemouth. Bournemouth scooped the top award.

Readers of Group Leisure Magazine voted between April and June and the ceremony was held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council tourism and culture briefholder Councillor Ian Bruce said: “As we all know Weymouth is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the British Isles.

“It is terrific to get that sort of recognition from readers of a leading travel magazine.

“Voting took place before the borough held the Olympic and Paralympic Games which showcased the borough on a world stage.

“The fantastic media coverage shown all around the world of our beautiful coastline will draw people to the area as well as attract returning visitors.”

Coun Bruce added: “There’s so much to do in the borough.

“Visitors can walk along our fantastic Esplanade and in our gardens, enjoy lots of great food in our restaurants and cafes and stay in hotels offering you wonderful views of our award-winning beach.

“Being nominated for this award is well and truly deserved.

“Congratulations goes to neighbouring Bournemouth making Dorset a doubly popular place to visit.”

The awards were presented by Group Leisure magazine editor Rob Yandell, alongside special guest, comedian and television personality Bobby Davro.

Mr Yandell said: “With more choice than ever before when it comes to arranging group trips and holidays, what better endorsement is there than a personal recommendation from group travel organisers?

“It is great that the industry can come together to celebrate the success of so many individuals and companies within the group travel trade.”
