ONE YOUNG ambassador’s summer was complete when he met the Prime Minister.

Karam Hayre, 16, from Weymouth was among a group of ambassadors from Weymouth and Portland invited to meet David Cameron at Number 10, Downing Street so that he could thank them for their hard work during the Olympics and Paralympics.

The PM thanked a number of ambassadors and games makers who were selected from across the country for their hard work and efforts in making the Olympic and Paralympic Games a success.

The 500 borough ambassadors were the welcoming faces of the borough for visitors coming down over the summer for the Games in a project that ran for 46 days.

Karam, who goes to Budmouth College, gave up 50 hours of his time across the summer.

He helped with the equality and diversity element of the ambassadors training based on his own experiences of being an Asian boy growing up in the borough.

He was also able to help international visitors through his ability to speak Punjabi. He said he was delighted to be asked to meet the Prime Minister.

He said: “I am honoured that out of all the hard working and enthusiastic ambassadors that I was chosen to go to Number 10. It’s a really great experience and I am so happy that I was given such an opportunity.”

He added: “The Prime Minster asked me what we did as Weymouth and Portland Ambassadors and about our favourite Olympic moments.

“I let him know about how we’ve helped out lots of people and about how I really enjoyed the opening and closing ceremonies from Weymouth Beach and the medal race when Ben Ainslie won gold.”

Karam’s father, Roger Hayre, said he was very proud of his son who achieved 12 A* grades at GCSE and is now studying biology, chemistry and geology at A-level.

He said: “He’s had a fantastic summer. He has worked very hard.

“Both me and his mum are proud as punch.”

He added: “This shows what can be done through hard work and dedication.”

Chairman of the Management Committee at the borough council, Mike Goodman thanked all the volunteers for the good work they had done on behalf of the borough.

He said: “It is fantastic that the Prime Minister has taken the time to thank our wonderful ambassadors as they really have done an incredible job.

“They have been the smiling faces of Weymouth and Portland during the Games and have worked tirelessly to ensure that our visitors were well looked after.”

He added: “I want to thank them all personally for volunteering and really adding to the Olympic and Paralympic experience.
