A DENTAL practice is offering free checks to mark Mouth Cancer Awareness Month.

Those who have not seen a dentist in over a year, who do not have a dentist or those whose registration has lap-sed, can get free screening at Pound-bury Dental Practice during November.

Mouth cancer affects up to 6,000 people in the UK every year, but early diagnosis can increase survival chances to 90 per cent.

Symptoms include mouth ulcers that do not heal after three weeks, red or white patches on the tongue or gums, unusual lumps or swellings, pain chewing or swallowing, bleeding or numbness.

Smoking, alcohol, the Human Pappilloma Virus (HPV) and poor diet are all risk factors.

The screening sessions will take place on selected Friday afternoons in November.
