NICE TO SEE that work has begun now to turn Dorchester Road into a more pedestrian-friendly street.

The chaps are there widening the footpath from Elwell Street to Prospect Place and then completing the path from the Royal Standard pub on the other side of the road to the bus stop by the field.

Great improvements – the work is expected to take seven weeks and then the road, narrower, will be clear again.

GARDENERS who are members of the Broadwey and Upwey Horticultural Society thoroughly enjoyed a very entertaining talk by Terry Heard at their last meeting. Terry, a local woodsman, held his audience in thrall with tales of coppicing and other woodland crafts.

Visitors are always welcome at the society’s meetings, held on the first Thursday of the month at St Nicholas and St Laurence School, Dorchester Road. On November 1 the speaker will be telling members, and anyone else who would like to go, about the restoration work at Kingston Lacy. There’s no charge, just turn up for 7.30pm.

UPWEY and Broadwey WI is still going strong. With a variety of informative and often amusing speakers, competitions (which are not too taxing!), exchanges of news and views and opportunities for friendship, the ladies welcome newcomers to their meetings on the second Thursday of the month at the Memorial Hall in Victoria Avenue.

Last month, there was a ploughmans lunch and auction of food items; at the next meeting on Thursday, November 8 at 2.30pm, Christmas flower arranging is the subject. Contact secretary Vivienne Bates on 813853 or just turn up.

There’s always tea and nice cake as well!

THE FIRST EXHIBITION of paintings and artwork by Sarah Studley and Colette Harris will be held at the Old School Village hall on the weekend October 26 to 28.

BONFIRE NIGHT is almost upon us as the evenings darken and November 5, as ever, will see Upwey’s fantastic fireworks, from 6pm.
