THE retiring head of an Ancient Order of Foresters marked leaving office with a charitable donation.

Hugh Chalker, who retired as chief ranger of Honorary Court Highclere No. 1 Weymouth of the Ancient Order of Foresters, presented a cheque for £800 to the St John Ambulance.

Mr Chalker made his presentation to the charity at Pilgrim House in Hope Square. The Honorary Court has met in Weymouth four times a year, for 126 years – ever since October 17, 1887, when it was founded by Pelly Hooper, who was the Town Clerk of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis for more than 20 years.

Each chief ranger chooses a charity for his year of office and Hugh Chalker picked St John Ambulance.

He said: “I chose St John Ambulance because of the good works they have done for the people of Weymouth and Portland over many years.”

Foresters and their wives gathered at Pilgrim House, which is the group’s new meeting venue, to present a cheque for £800 to St John Ambulance representatives Julie Dean and Pat Graham.
