A BRIDPORT student is celebrating after graduating from university.

And Lukas Renee-Cemmick, 21, from Bridport, is living proof that acute dyslexia is no bar to academic success.

Lukas is currently nearing the end of a four-year apprenticeship at helicopter design company Augusta Westland, and has just graduated with an HNC in mechanical engineering from Yeovil University Centre, which is attached to Bournemouth University.

He has been an apprentice since 2010 and will be done by September 2014.

Lukas has dyslexia and mum Annalisa said he often found school frustrating given the heavy emphasis on reading and writing.

Given his difficulties Lukas was home educated for several years, with help from the special educational needs team at Beaminster School where he achieved good GCSE grades.

He went on to Weymouth College where he studied engineering for a BTEC extended diploma.

Proud mum Annalisa said: “Lukas was a very inventive and creative child. He always wanted to know how things worked.”

She added: “Now at 21, after much hard work and many assignments, Lukas’ standard of writing is excellent. He practises karate in Bridport and designs all kinds of useful items in his spare time.”
