THROUGH billows of steam and a cacophony of whistles, a man could be seen slipping a diamond ring onto his girlfriend’s finger.

The Dorset Steam Fair’s final night on Sunday August 28 became the scene of romance when Adam McKay proposed to Kirsty Barker.

Next to Countess, a Garrett 4NHP showman’s tractor the couple help maintain, Mr McKay bent a knee and offered a diamond ring to Miss Barker.

The pair have attended the event in Tarrant Hinton since they first got together four years ago, but for Adam the steam fair has been a far more integral part of his life.

The man from Ottery St Mary has been going to the show since he was eight years old and had been planning on the proposal since last year’s show.

The tractor he proposed to Kirsty beside belongs to their friends Chris and Robert Gliddon but the couple play their part in its upkeep.

Hundreds of visitors gathered to see dozens of showman’s engines blow their whistles as the clock struck midnight on the last night of the fair.

A video of the steamy spectacular that was streamed live to Facebook from the top of a fairground wheel has reached more than 150,000 people.
