Debate on women bishops

A REPORT on the appointment of women bishops was due to be discussed at a Diocesean Synod meeting in Corfe Mullen today.

The Bishop of Salisbury, The Rt Rev Dr David Stancliffe, was due to deliver his Presidential address to the Synod at St Nicholas’s Church.

Dr Stancliffe was joining the gathering of elected clergy and lay members from throughout the Diocese shortly before attending the General Synod of the Church of England in Westminster.

Synod members at Corfe Mullen will be briefed on the ‘Back to Church Sunday’ initiative aimed at welcoming friends and neighbours back to church on the last Sunday of September.

Plans to celebrate the United Nations’ International Year of the Child 2009 will also be explained including a number of events as will the resources currently available to parishes regarding work with children and young people.

There will also be a report on legislation regarding the appointment of women bishops, which will also be discussed at the General Synod meeting.
