Care workers join walk for hospice
STEPPING OUT: June Rees is organising a walk in aid of Romanian Day Hospice
STEPPING OUT: June Rees is organising a walk in aid of Romanian Day Hospice

ROMANIAN care workers will walk with churchgoers from Weymouth in aid of a hospice.

The doctor, medical director and pharmacy assistant from the Emanuel hospice in Oradea, north west Romania will arrive in Weymouth next Saturday.

While in town they will take part in a walk in aid of their hospice organised by June Rees, of Weymouth's Baptist Church, which has supported the hospice for years.

Mrs Rees, of Deansleigh Close, Preston, Weymouth, was invited to the opening of the hospice in 2005 following the death of her husband, Gareth.

She said: "When my husband died half of the money donated through the church after his funeral went to the hospice, which was just starting up at the time.

"I was invited over to the opening and it's been like my baby ever since."

She added: "Quite a few people from the church have been over there to visit but staff there were keen to come and see us at the church too and to say thank you for how we've supported them."

Mrs Rees said the hospice, which mainly cares for cancer patients, is currently so under-funded that it cannot care for people overnight and functions like a day care centre.

She said: "They're dreaming of being able to open at night and function like other hospices.

"The church's relationship with the hospice is a bit special to us because we've been involved since the beginning.

"And for me, it's also happening in my husband's memory."

Anyone wishing to take part in the fundraising walk should be outside Café Oasis, Overcombe, Weymouth at 11am on Saturday, March 8.

The walk is not sponsored but people taking part can make a donation to the church's hospice fund.

For more information contact Mrs Rees, who has been a member of the church since 1973, on 01305 834289.

The hospice staff plan to stay in Weymouth until Monday, March 10.
