CHURCHGOERS in Victorian dress have celebrated the 150th anniversary of the rebuilding of their church.

The rededication service at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Cattistock, was attended by Dorchester town crier Alistair Chisholm, folk musician Bonnie Sartin of The Yetties and the Bishop of Sherborne, the Rt Rev Tim Thornton among others.

The service was based on the 1858 consecration service and included music from the Beaminster Gallery Quire and was followed by lunch at the village hall.

The Rev Graham Perryman, of St Peter and St Paul's Church, said: "It was wonderful. Around half the congregation of some 130 people came in period costume.

"We’re very grateful to the Bishop of Sherborne....He talked about how we should see churches not as buildings but as groups of people – that was a key theme.”

"We're very grateful to the Bishop of Sherborne, who recently came back from Sudan, and spoke about the similarities and differences between the church in Sudan and Cattistock and also the differences between our church now and 150 years ago.

"He talked about how we should see churches not as buildings but as groups of people - that was a key theme."
