Fabulous fashion gains gold Abbotsbury
GOOD news is received from Alison Roberts of the Chesil Bank Pre- School, which is held in Abbotsbury village. Alison tells me that they raised £636 for the pre-school at the Travelling Trends fashion show that was held on March 7. There was tremendous support from the Chesil Bank villages and beyond. Alison says that thanks must go to everyone who helped in any way to organise the event and to the models who' were wonderful'.
AMAZING Abbotsbury Music does it again. As part of their 2008 programme of events they brought Eclipse Baroque Fusion to the intriguing Electric Palace cinema in Bridport on March 7 and 8, for a concert of Spanish baroque music and dance.
As part Abbotsbury Music's education programme 54 children from St Mary's School, Bridport and Burton Bradstock School took part in workshops run by Eclipse Baroque Fusion for Abbotsbury Music and then accompanied the musicians in part of the Friday matinee performance having learned syncopated Spanish dance and a song in harmony.
The group was comprised of three musicians who played harps (Joy Smith), viol and recorder (Layil Barr) and percussion (Andres Ticino). How amazing it was to hear Layil Barr as she played a double recorder, which had been especially made for her from a design seen on classical Greek pots. Mariona Castelles Adell who had flown in from Barcelona especially for the performances wowed the sell out audience with her sinuous and sultry flamenco dancing. The Saturday performance was a sell out despite the awful weather a testament to the quality of Abbotsbury Music's productions.
THE OPERA this year is Donizetti's Don Pasquale. Abbotsbury Music are bringing The Garden Opera Company to Abbey House garden again on July 4,6,and 7, 2008.
Bridport Arts Centre is providing the box office facilities for Abbotsbury Music this year. It will be open from the beginning of April from 10am -5pm Tuesday to Saturday inclusive. Requests for brochures etc should go to the Abbotsbury Music office 01305 871475 or by email at info@abbmusic.org.uk
Langton Herring
AN EMAIL from Judy and Margaret, churchwardens for St Peter's Church, Langton Herring tells me that the recent glorious concert by Salisbury Cathedral Choir on Monday, March 3rd raised an impressive £875.53 for church funds. Well done everyone. They also apologies for a typing error in the programme, it should have read that the little church costs £144 a week to keep open not £144 per day!
IN A report from Fay Easy on the March meeting of the Langton Herring Village Club, Fay tells me that their guest speaker was local archaeologist Bill Putman, who is co-author of a fascinating book entitled The Treasure of Rennes-le-Chateau. This book is described as the truth behind the da Vinci Code'.
In fact it was published before the Dan Brown novel, a mixture of fact and fiction, on this subject that captured the imagination of countless people. Fay says that the history of the village of Rennes-le-Chateau is convoluted and the mystery of its treasure can only be fully enjoyed by reading Bill's book.
THE next village club meeting will be on April 1 at 7.30pm in the village hall. The guest speaker will be John Willow who will be presenting Water and the Great Stink, a talk about the Sutton Poyntz pumping station. There is a visitor's fee of £2, which includes refreshments.
ON SATURDAY, April 12 the village club annual coffee morning for charity will be held in the village hall from 10.30am until noon. There will be all sorts of stalls and the profits will be divided between Weldmar and the village club.
A DATE for your diaries. Langton Herring Village Fete and Dog Show will take place on Saturday, July 26. For further details contact either Anne Kerins on 01305 871407 or Mandy King on 01305 871355.1:01pm Wednesday 26th March 2008 Print  Email this
