CANDLES to St Catherine's will be lit once again on May 24th.

One thousand lanterns will line the hillside route up to St Catherine's Chapel, Abbotsbury, and each candle lantern will commemorate some one special.

Candles are now available at £2.50 each from Abbotsbury Heritage Fayre on 01305 871085/ 871183 and from various outlets in the village.

There will be a hospitality marquee and viewpoint off Chapel Lane for those who prefer not to climb the hill and there will be 4x4 transport for those who need a little help to reach the chapel.

The chapel service begins at 7.30pm.

For more information go to www.abbotsbury.co.uk/heritagefayre Torches and stout footwear will be the order of the day for this very special event.

Langton Herring

THERE is great News for Langton Herring Village Hall.

Sheila Milton, secretary for the village hall tells me that Langton Herring Village Hall Committee have been successful in their bid for Lottery funding.

The village hall committee has been working steadily over the past two years to facilitate refurbishment of the hall, which at one time was the village school and church hall.

The community is small and the undertaking immense so the refurbishment has had to be divided into two main stages, the kitchen and the toilets, which will include disabled facilities.

With advice and support from Dorset Community Action's village hall adviser Lois Rose the committee were delighted to learn just before Easter that they had been awarded the full grant of £10,000 towards a project that will cost in the region of £16,000 by Awards For All from the Big Lottery Fund.

The extra cash needed will be met by Chesil Bank Parish Council, limited village hall funds and fundraising.

The old kitchen is being removed at present and with all new mod cons it should be available for hire again from mid May.

Sheila tells me that one of the reasons that they have awarded the funding is for their wish to start a lunch club for the community and to improve facilities for those hiring the hall.

Over the next two years the committee will be working to upgrade the toilets and storage. This work will require additional funding and the committee will continue to pursue grants and assistance to support their small but enthusiastic community.
