Doctor reveals Saxon past of village
THE speaker at the last WI meeting, Dr Mark Forrest of the Dorset History Centre, believes that Broadmayne was once a single Saxon Manorial Estate and showed members maps which bear this out.
He explained the important state documents, which controlled the allocation of land in some instances, and had examples of the fate of some parishioners, some happy and some sad, in past decades and centuries.
He showed the list of Broadmayne men, between the ages of 18 and 50, who were available for the militia in the 18th Century and also the names of Broadmayne landowners paying land tax, at that time.
He also detailed the various sales of Broadmayne land over the years.
He was warmly thanked by Jean Spriggs on behalf of members.
Margaret Cushing gave a report from the village hall committee meeting, which concerned new curtains for the hall and some draught-proofing work.
She also reported that a letter had been sent from the Institute in support of a 20mph speed limit outside the school.
The evening ended with interesting potted histories of our members, arranged by Deanna Robinson.
The speakers on Thursday, March 13 at 7.00pm will be Mr and Mrs Polley talking about the Donkey Sanctuary.
