20mph speed limit refused
BROADMAYNE Parish Council has been told that the request for a 20 mph limit for Knighton Lane in the vicinity of the School has been refused by the county council, as the length of road involved does not meet the council's criteria for a lower limit.
WEST Dorset District Council has refused planning applications to erect a new detached dwelling at I Martel Close and the erection of a new dwelling on land adjacent to Cowley House with vehicular access from Crosstree Close.
Approval has been given to erect an extension to form a double garage at 2 Chalky Road.
Under consultation is the erection of a conservatory at Little Manor, Osmington Drove.
No objections were raised regarding internal and external alterations at 5 Main Street, although the council will be objecting to the continued retrospective applications and the destruction of original features and asking whether the alterations to the wc under the stairs can be carried out without disturbance to original features.
The council will be also objecting to the erection of a dwelling and modified existing access at 19 Martel Close, in view of the increase in size to that for which there is already planning permission.
It will continue to overlook neighbouring properties and have an adverse effect on the street scene. It is also within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
IT was agreed to make a grant of £353 to the parochial church council towards the cost of the upkeep of the burial ground.
THE Clerk was asked to contact the district and county council about damage to verges in Martel Close and opposite Woodacre and also to ask about replacement of trees in Martel Close.
The Clerk has also been asked to contact the county council about cutting back the high hedge between Bramble Drove and Rectory Road on Main Street.
THE council approved a quotation from Queensbury for the provision of a bus shelter at the Charlmont Cross end of Knighton Lane. It is exactly the same model as the one by the school.
It also accepted the quotation for the provision of a hard standing from the Direct Works Organisation (DWO) of Dorset County Council.
The land upon which the shelter is to be erected belongs to the County Council as the Highway Authority.
THOSE walking past the site near Charlmont Cross will have noticed white spray on the grass depicting the position of the hard standing and it is hoped that work starts before the DWO's grounds maintenance staff need to cut the grass!
WITH the assistance of County Councillor Crowhurst the owner of the piece of land in Knighton Lane upon which the council would like to put a seat has been identified. The Clerk has been asked to contact him for permission and also obtain quotations for the cost of a hard standing and the seat.
THE Phase 3 consultation on the Charles Street Development, Dorchester was held during April. The main concern is that Charles Street Car Park will be out of action for a considerable length of time, something which affects all those visiting Dorchester by car.
WITH regard to the Regional Finals of the Calor Village of the Year, the visit of the judges was on Monday, 21 April. Mrs June Salt, the parish council chairman, took a leading role in co-ordinating the 2 hour visit.
Places visited included the school and children's centre and St Martin's Church. The judges then walked from the church, along Main Street, up Chalky Road and through the children's play area, up to the surgery and visited the shop and post office.
They returned to the village hall for a welcome cup of tea and presentation about the village and at each place the judges were introduced to parishioners.
Mrs Salt was chairman of the parish council when Broadmayne reached the finals which were held in London in 1999, so has some prior experience.
THE annual parish meeting is reported on separately, but the parish council is supporting the "Keep our Post Office" campaign and will be continuing work in respect of the provision of improved sports facilities.
As a result of a letter from a parishioner regarding the difficulty of delivery drivers finding addresses in Chalky Road near the crossroads, West Dorset District Council was approached. The council has agreed to ask that council to provide a sign to try to clarify matters.
MEMBERS of the parish are always welcome to attend and speak in the democratic period. At this meeting three parishioners attended, all of whom spoke with the council.
THE next meeting of the council is the Annual Parish Council meeting which will be held on Monday, May 12 at 7.30 pm in the hall at the back of the Methodist Church.
