  • IT SEEMS that Florence Gould was the driving force in opening a drapery store in 1902, in Dorchester, with her husband Harry, and that they would begin a small dynasty of Goulds.

This has led to the most famous family-owned store in Dorchester, which now has diverse buildings and departments, cafes and a garden centre in Weymouth.

Its history was unrolled by Roger Gould, the present Managing Director, with help from Rebecca Murphy, one of the Directors.

The story of the development of the firm which has risen and risen, by hard work and some inspirational risk taking, made fascinating hearing to the members of Broadmayne WI, all of whom had shopped at Goulds, many of us finding just what we wanted at one of the many areas of merchandise.

Details of very early sale items quaintly described, the cost of them and the length of time several former employees had served the firm, was very interesting.

The store, with its variety, is now on line' and good delivery service makes it a unique and valuable asset to our nearest town.

Roger and Rebecca were warmly thanked by Moira Dickerson who expressed members' pleasure at having such a comprehensive store to enjoy.

After the speakers, the annual meeting was held. The secretary, Margaret Cushing gave the annual report and Ruth Small, the treasurer, presented a healthy financial statement.

Elected committee members and everyone in the Institute were delighted when Wendy Stent agreed to serve as President for a further year. On behalf of the members, Wendy and the committee were thanked for their work over the last year by Margaret Mortimer.

A new member was presented with an information pack and three visitors were welcomed, one of whom is the sister of Roger Gould.

Wendy described a wonderful W.I. walking holiday that she and two other members had enjoyed recently and Christine Walker won the Flower of the Month competition. Many members entered their names for an outing on June 10.

Deanna Robinson had devised a Shopping List game, where a number of articles, all of which could be purchased at Goulds, were displayed and memorised by members. They then had to list those they could remember, after the items were covered.

The May meeting will welcome David Price-Hughes who will speak on Music in my Life.
