David Price Hughes

DAVID Price Hughes shared with members of Broadmayne and West Knighton WI, incidents in his life which seemed to have, somewhat incidentally, furthered his career to the good.

These were always connected with his interest in music and his encounters with great names were interesting and surprising.

While not being a conventionally trained musician, he delighted his audience by interspersing his talk with a variety of well known pieces, beautifully played on his violin.

Dena Sealy thanked Mr Price Hughes, with a shared childhood remembrance of listening to an old recoding of the voice of Dame Clara Butt, as he had done.

Three new members were welcomed and everyone was reminded about the imminent outing.

Members on tea duty were extremely pleased this month, to be using the splendid new dishwasher that the Village Hall Committee has installed in the hall. It is a very quiet machine, and no tea towels needed!

A letter of thanks will be sent from the Institute.

The very successful family skittles night will be repeated and the walkers' group have planned another Dorset trek.

Jean Sexton gave an excellent report on the recent Spring Council Meeting in Poole, where Julian Fellows had been the speaker.

The President, Wendy Stent, thanked Betty Voss and Deanna Robinson for their valuable work on the committee over the last few years and Janet Kennewell invited everyone to a tea party, where she would explain the Home Start project.

The flower of the month was won by Christine Bradshaw.

A plea was made for everyone who had ever used the post office, to write a letter to state how its closure would affect them.

All the post offices in Dorset are potentially under threat of closure, and members were asked to support the group in the village who are trying to prevent this happening in Broadmayne.

Letters can be handed in at the post office.

The speaker at the next meeting, on Thursday, June 12, will be Steve White who will talk on highways and byways in Dorset and members were requested to bring any pictures that they may have of old Dorset, for display.
