  • THE NEW 2008-09 Saturday Football season in Maiden Newton is about to begin. Training resumes on Saturday, September 13 at the Youth Centre and is open to girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 16. Under 6's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the whole session. Registration will take place from 9 - 9.30am and then there will be training until 11am. If you would like to register early or ask for more information, please call Mike on 01300 321202 or email michael.trew745@btinternet.com The total cost for the whole season is only £15, but in order to be able to play you must have football boots, shin pads, a drinks bottle and trainers. There is a range of second hand football boots for sale at very reasonable rates (sizes 3, 5 and 5 are available at present). Water bottles and shin pads are also available. Any interested young people should come along on September 13. You don't need to be good at football - the whole idea is to have fun. If you are unsure, you can try the first session for free and decide afterwards if you want to join the club.
  • ARTSREACH present Beanfeast' at Melbury Osmond Village Hall on Thursday, September 18. This will be a cocktail of sensuous delight, anorexic nightmares and exotic locations expressed through word and song always featuring food and women's involvement with it. It will be presented by musician and singer Sammy Hurden, accompanied by actress Cheryl Campbell (who appeared with RSC and in Morse, Touch of Frost and many more) and another actress, whose identity is yet to be revealed. Advance booking for this event is essential. Tickets cost £12 and this price includes a two-course meal. There will be a bar on the evening. Tickets and further details are available from Terese Oakford on 01935 83410.
  • DON'T FORGET the skittles Presentation Night in the skittle alley at the Chalk and Cheese, Maiden Newton, on Friday, September 19. The evening starts at 8pm and will be hosted by the legend himself, Mr Paul Valinski. It promises to be a very enjoyable occasion with awards, prizes and a draw, as well as a chance to enjoy a drink or two in good company, so don't miss the night out of your life! The new 2008/09 season will begin on Monday, September 22, but unfortunately there is now one team short. Anyone who knows of a team that would like to make up the 9 teams should contact Dave at the chalk and Cheese on 01300 320600.
  • ALL MELBURY men are invited to the first Melbury Men's Breakfast on Saturday, September 20 at the Clay Pigeon Shooting café on Warden Hill, starting at 8.30am. It is planned to have six meetings a year over a generous cooked breakfast, considering some aspect of the Christian faith. The first meeting will take the form of a wide-ranging discussion on the future programme. It is envisaged that future meetings will include interesting local speakers and there will also be opportunities for shooting, playing golf and fishing together. Please come along and bring a friend, as well as some good ideas for future meetings. If you are planning to come, please contact John (01935 83003), Andrew (01935 891083) or Paul (01300 321112).
