Gig to help Sophie on conservation project

Cerne Abbas

A FUNDRAISING gig for villager Sophie Copson takes place in the Giant Inn on Friday, April 18.

Sophie is taking part in Operation Wallacea this summer, an international, not-for-profit conservation agency.

This agency operates scientific, volunteer-led wildlife conservation expeditions to regions of ecological importance worldwide.

Sophie will be going to Honduras. This gig has been organised in order to support her on her way.

Talented musicians from Thomas Hardye School will be playing and Honduran cuisine will be on offer.

Please visit the Giant Inn for this special night and sample some food with a difference and give a donation if possible.

By the way, the Giant Inn also offers home-cooked food now. Take a look at the menu when you next pop in!

  • SOME of you may already have met Jacqui Allen who has recently been appointed Police Community Support Officer.

Jacqui would like to offer villagers and people from surrounding areas the opportunity to talk to her about any issues where she might be of help.

She will therefore be available for a chat and a coffee in Abbots Tearooms on the following dates: Thursday, April 17 10.30-11.30am, Thursday, May 1 2.30-3:30pm and Thursday, May 15 10.30-11:30am.

  • THE Royal Oak has recently been taken over by Dale and Nicky Weller.

Both have years of experience in the pub trade, especially Dale, and their last pub was located in Ringwood.

So if you want to enjoy a nice glass of wine and honest pub food, give The Royal Oak a try!

  • FOOTBALL training started again on April 1.

If you would like to enrol your child for some training or even fancy a bit of "footie" yourself and get fit at the same time, give Andy Ross a call on 01300 341804.

    Piddle Valley

THE Piddle Valley Pumas are a youth football club, offering team and club football for boys and girls from the age of four, from the villages including and surrounding Piddletrenthide and Buckland Newton.

This coming season is their first using Buckland Newton Recreation Ground and as a result the number of young people participating from this area has increased.

Sadly, due to the wet conditions so far, it has been difficult to use the pitch for any length of time.

A proposal has been forwarded to the village to consider having the drainage improved.

New faces are always welcome, though, at The Piddle Valley Pumas and if you are interested in joining them or enrolling your child, e-mail the Secretary, Janice Bishop, on janibee@btinternet.com

    Buckland Newton

THE Crocus Walk that took place last month managed to raise a magnificent £570 in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The Crocus Walk Team would like to thank everyone who joined the walk, as well as Tim and Angela from The Gaggle of Geese for their welcoming reception on everyone's return.

  • BUCKLAND Newton Primary School is looking for people who can help Year 4/5's band practice.

If there is anyone out there who can help the band improve their playing skills over their lunch break, please contact headteacher Nicola Ralph on 01300 345393.
