Historical Society appealing for help with plane crash
Cerne Abbas
CERNE HISTORICAL SOCIETY is appealing for anyone who can help with shedding some light on a flying accident that took place in 1944 to come forward.
Jeff Beaumont is researching the death of his grandfather in a flying accident between Cerne Abbas and Piddletrenthide.
His understanding is that on 18th August 1944, flight officer Robert Charles Beaumont was flying a Hawker Typhoon through bad weather when he crashed into a hilltop at Encomb or Incombe Wood, killing him instantly.
There was an Accident Investigation Bureau report into the crash but unfortunately almost all their records for 1944 were destroyed in a bombing raid in 1945.
Can anyone supply more information?
If so, please let George Mortimer know (01300 341396) and he will pass the details on to Jeff Beaumont.
