Give blood to assist local study
Cerne Valley and beyond
LOCAL Research Projects are always of great interest and the following has been passed on to me by the distributor of one of the local parish magazines:
The Wellcome Trust is funding a study by the Clincal Pharmacology Department at the University of Oxford.
This study is led by Sir Walter Bodmer, Professor of Genetics.
It entails collecting blood samples from rural populations throughout the British Isles.
These samples will allow the scientists to look at the differences in people's genetic make-ups.
These differences in turn may have an impact on 21st century science!
The project will help shed light on ancient migrations within the British Isles.
On Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14 the team will be in Dorchester to collect around 150 samples.
If you are over 18, can trace the birth of all your grandparents to the same local area (within a 30 mile radius) and would like to volunteer, please call Tammy Day on 01865 863819 or 01865 617007.
You can also e-mail her on tammy.day@clinpharm.ox.ac.uk.
If you would like to know more about the project before committing yourself or are simply interested, call Tammy to reserve a place at an evening reception on Tuesday, May 13, to be held at St. Peter's Church in Dorchester.
Professor Sir Walter Bodmer will then give a talk about this study.

WAYFARERS' next meeting takes place on Tuesday, April 29 from 8pm - 9.30pm.
The topic of this month's discussion is "Women: The Bible's attitude to them".
It is hoped that many will attend to contribute to what promises to be an interesting evening.
The meeting will take place in the village hall as usual, with refreshments available.
LYDDEN Walkers are out and about again!
Their next walk will take place on Saturday, April 19 and will be led by Dieter and Zelda Rossi.
Everyone will meet at the Halsey Arms in Pulham at 10.15am for a 10.30am start.
The walk will be four miles from Hilton up to Bulbarrow and back and will take under two hours.

MOVIOLA: The next performance will be on Monday, April 21 at 7.30pm in the village hall.
The film "Kite Runner" will be shown which is a moving story about two boys in Afghanistan.
It heart-wrenchingly shows what it means to love, betray and live with guilt and the feeling of failure.
It equally explores Middle-Eastern values and follows an award-winning book.
As usual, doors open at 7pm for refreshments and the sale of tickets at the door.
The new flat rate for tickets is £ 5.
It is recommended to indeed book them in advance and this can be done up until Saturday, April 19 by posting the correct monies through the doors of Shirley Reeve, 26 Back Lane, Ghislaine Garvey, 1 Long Street and Yvonne Rossiter in Godmanstone or Heather Smith in Minterne.
The tickets will then await you at the door.
NOTE for your diary: Cerne Abbas First School will be performing at the Country Dancing Festival in Puddletown on Tuesday, July 8, having recently formed a Country Dancing Club.
