Every child matters!

Cerne Abbas

  • CERNE Abbas First School would like to remind everyone of the FOCAS (Friends of Cerne Abbas School) Mayfair which will take place on Saturday, May 10.

It starts at 2pm at the school playing field and is a major fundraiser.

So please search around your homes for items and start digging up your garden for cuttings!

Cakes, bric-a-brac, plants. Books, DVDs, toys...all sorts of items are welcome.

The school is looking forward to welcoming many visitors, any donations are happily accepted in the school from the week commencing Monday, May 5.

Volunteers are also required - please see Alex in the school office.

Headteacher Mrs Williams gave a talk recently during which she mapped out the different areas in which the community of Cerne Abbas has supported the learning and well-being of the children in their local school linked to the "Every Child Matters" agenda.

The government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to: be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being.

There are many examples of this and they make interesting reading for everyone: Enjoyment and achievement happens when local villagers work with the children's ICT skills, listen to their reading or support advanced children in various activities.

The community helps to promote the school by announcing events in the village newsletter and local newspapers.

All appropriate health and safety checks within the school environment are being carried out regularly and all regular visitors have CRB checks.

Visitors to the school include the police liaison officer who works with the pupils on issues such as stranger, danger and road safety.

The school children make positive contributions by participating in the village fete and taking part in the various church services, for example.

Economic well-being is achieved by regular fundraising and maintaining the children's thirst for learning so they ultimately leave the school system with good qualifications.

Shouldn't we all have these aspirations and values and strive to better ourselves, not only for our sakes but also for our children to be proud of us?
