Dreams of new school become reality
Beating the hunger after beating the bounds!
Beating the hunger after beating the bounds!

  • GREAT news: The planning application for the new school was submitted on Tuesday, April 15.

The Digby Estate has agreed to sell the required amount of land at Simsay for the new school.

From this point onwards, eight weeks of public consultation will take effect, including a consultation with the parish council.

Cerne Abbas First School is urging everyone to write to West Dorset District Council in support of the application.

The village really needs a new, modern school but of course there is also room to raise concerns, if anyone wishes to do so.

  • BEATING the bounds was a resounding success!

This ancient custom of walking the parish boundaries was revived on Sunday, April 27, Rogation Sunday. Approximately 50 walkers rose early to commence the 14 miles walk at 9:30am in the morning amidst fine weather.

Altogether, some 80 walkers took part, many joining the main group at Nether Cerne, where lunch was held.

I walked the second part myself and it was interesting to take a rather different route back to the village!

The ensuing Barbecue in The New Inn was very welcome and well organised, despite the occasional rain drop that had fallen by then.

Overall, however, the weather gods were with us and young and old took full advantage of this walk with a difference!

All our thanks must go to everyone who helped organise it, especially the initiator, Mike Clark.

I am already looking forward to beating the bounds next year!

  • WEYMOUTH is not normally on my community news agenda but I have been approached by a lady called Sue regarding the Weymouth Carnival.

Sue is part of a small charity fighting to retain the famous carnival, following the retirement of the Weymouth Round Table.

Her team would like to encourage everyone to be a part of it - not just the residents of Weymouth.

The event this year will be held over three days, Monday being a fun day on the beach, Tuesday with Weymouth FC Sports on the beach and Wednesday being the actual carnival day itself.

The dates are Monday, August 18, Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20.

The procession this year will be completely foot-based.

Anyone is welcome to walk the route in fancy dress or use their imagination to think of a novel mode of transport that does not include an engine.

Next year, many changes are afoot for the Esplanade.

This could mean that this is your last chance to walk the famous carnival route on the seafront.

Sue and her team would like to encourage everyone from the Cerne Valley to participate and promote their local community with imaginative displays.

Do not hesitate to contact her for more information - 01305 830255 or 07855 613757.
