Chickens rule the roost!

  • CHICKERELL United football club, the chickens, will always look back on the 2007/08 season as being one of, if not the greatest, season in their history.

The first team, with the guidance of Dave Drage and his assistant Maurice Welch, remain unbeaten with one re-arranged fixture outstanding and have finished as winners of the Dorset Senior league.

The reserve team managed by Willy Gibson and his assistant Chris Weeks also confirmed themselves as Dorset Reserve league champions with a 1-0 victory away to local adversaries Portland United.

Not wishing to be outdone the third team, under the leadership of Barry Allen in his first season at Chickerell senior level, qualified for the final of the Intermediate Cup where they were unfortunately beaten 5-1 by a very good Dorset Knob side.

The season was complete however when the under 18's, under the leadership of Graham Welch, won the Dorset Youth cup at the Wessex Stadium with a 1-0 win against Hamworthy United.

The medals and league trophies were presented on Saturday, April 19 by Phil Watson on behalf of the Dorset Football Association.

The presentation was introduced Syd Plummer, a stalwart of both the D.C.F.A and Chickerell United Football Club and took place in the Chickerell sports pavilion.

The Mayor of Chickerell, Councillor John Dean extended his congratulations to the club for their great achievements.

A buffet, provided by The Lugger, and wine were available to the dignitaries in attendance as well as the players and supporters.

The season will be completed with the annual presentation evening which is being held at the Willowbed Hall on Saturday, May 17.

They would like to thank all their supporters who turned out in all weathers throughout the season and they look forward to seeing you in 2008/09's season! Congratulations to all involved.

  • THE Victory Hall whist drives have been running for a month now with the appreciated help of Ann Gill and they are starting to get very popular.

They always have a raffle and a cup of tea or coffee half way through and the people who have been going say they are really enjoying themselves.

It isn't a serious event and novices are extremely welcome for an enjoyable relaxed game.

They take place on Tuesday afternoons starting at 2pm until 4pm in the Charlestown Victory Hall.

  • Also at the Victory Hall the coffee mornings are really well attended now but they always welcome new faces.

They have a fish and chip lunch once a month and on Wednesday, May 28 Alf's fish and chip shop have organised a mystery coach trip for the group through the generosity of Bluebird Coaches followed by lunch back at the hall - they are all looking forward to this and would like to thank John and Karen from Alf's fish and chip shop for everything they do for the community.
