Generous local donations help villagers in Nepal

  • A FEW weeks ago I mentioned the wonderful work that Richard Backwell of Sutton Poyntz is doing to improve the living conditions of villagers in Nepal, and that he had turned his attention to a sewing project which would enable the women of two villages to make clothes for themselves and their families. This meant Richard needed sewing machines and asked if anyone had an old hand operated ones that they would be happy to donate.

Talking to Richard recently I am delighted to be able to tell you that a number of local people generously responded to his appeal. So much so that when he goes out to Nepal with a walking party early this summer and with youngsters from Wey Valley School later in the year he has enough sewing machines to use up all the spare baggage allowance of the parties on the aircraft.

Richard would like to thank everyone who donated the machines, and has promised, on his return, to let me have a photograph of them in use by the village ladies.

  • IT WAS a close run contest between David Mannings and Nic Lonsdale for the council seat for the Preston ward (which of course includes Sutton Poyntz), with David just winning by 44 votes. Now the voting is over I hope that we can all, whatever our political affiliations, unite behind David in achieving the best for Weymouth in general and our local ward in particular.

We should also be proud of ourselves, for the turnout of those eligible to vote in the ward was nearly 60%, the highest locally and well above the national average. It shows that the great majority of residents really do care about what goes on in this area.

  • THE NEW Preston St Andrew's Angels' scheme - trained, reliable, caring local volunteers who will provide support to other local residents who, because of age, infirmity or illness are finding it difficult to live independently in their own homes - has just received a huge financial boost with an anonymous and very generous donation of £4,500 towards the training costs of the first group of volunteers. If you would like to find out more - without any obligation - drop in to the Church Rooms on any Tuesday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm, ring 837147 or email standrewsangels@hotmail.co.uk
  • CHRISTIAN Aid Week is taking place between Sunday, 11 May and Saturday, 17 May. It is hoped that every home in Preston and Sutton Poyntz will be visited, as well as those in Osmington. Last year over 80 collectors took part and collected over £5000 from the generous folk in our area. This was included in over £10m raised country wide. Please put as much as you can spare in the envelopes that will be arriving soon, and remember, if you pay tax in the UK, to fill in the Gift Aid declaration, which adds 28% to your donation. Also, if you have a little time to spare to become a collector, give Caroline a ring on 832529 and she will be delighted to tell you what you can do to help this very worth while charity.
