9:28pm Wednesday 16th July 2008

Buckland Newton

  • THE Lydden Walkers' next walk takes place on Saturday, July 26 and will lead everyone from Tyneham to Kimmeridge and back to a barbecue in Tyneham car par.

Everyone is welcome to join whether you want to do the whole walk or just wander through Tyneham Village - which is very interesting indeed as I know from personal experience.

It would be appreciated if anyone wanting to participate could let the organisers know in advance.

Please call Doug, Sylvia or Kevin Morse on 01300 345341.

The group will meet at the Gaggle of Geese at 10am for a 10:15am start.

Please bring some food and drink for the barbecue to be shared out.

  • FOR those of you who have been following my updates on the events of the Butterfly Conservation Branch, here are the up-coming ones - also of interest for novice, interested nature lovers: Saturday, August 2 sees a moth trapping evening at Alners Gorse Reserve, starting at 8pm.

Anyone who would like to camp is welcome to stay overnight.

There will be a barbecue, please bring your own contribution.

On Sunday, August 3, the analysis of the moths trapped last night will take place.

If you are unable to stay the night but would still like to take part, join the group at 9am to look at the moths caught in the light trap.

Refreshments will be provided.

This is followed by a family bug hunt and picnic (bring your own lunch, drinks will be provided).

The hunt starts at 11am and in the afternoon, from 2pm onwards, an open afternoon for all the family will be held, with guided walks, followed by tea and cakes.

Alners Gorse reserve entrance is on the road from Hazelbury Bryan to Kings Stag.

Map reference ST 736100.

  • FOR completion's sake I will also mention the events at Lankham Bottom, a reserve which is situated off the minor road from Cattistock to the A37, map reference ST606004: On Saturday, July 26 a moth trapping evening takes place there as well.

It starts at 7:30pm and is followed by a barbecue.

Again, people are welcome to stay overnight and asked to contribute to the meal.

On the following day, Sunday, July 27, the Lankham Bottom Open Day and Kite Festival takes place.

You also have the opportunity to meet everyone at 9am to look at the moths caught the night before.

The Kite festival begins at 10am.

Learn how to build and decorate a giant butterfly kite.

Light refreshments will be provided but lunch needs to be brought.

Guided walks commencing at 2pm will start the afternoon off.

There will be an opportunity to look at butterflies and other wildlife, followed by tea and cakes.

For more information on any of the above, please contact Nigel Spring on 01963 23559 or 07981 776767 or e-mail him: nigelspring@yahoo.co.uk
