ABBEYFIELD'S McPherson House in Wyke Oliver Close recently held their annual garden party on a lovely sunny afternoon. Unfortunately the Sea Cadets Band was unable to perform, but Chairman Barbara Mills came to the rescue with her recordings, and all the visitors enjoyed the music while browsing through the bric-a-brac and plants, taking part in the tombola or viewing June Snell's marvellous display - helped by Margaret Tambling - of beautiful hand embroidered cards. Of course none of this would have been complete without the welcoming cups of tea and cakes which were being served. The money raised from the garden party goes towards the amenity fund for both of Abbeyfield's two houses in Weymouth, the other being Leigh House, which helps provide outings and other events for the residents.
RECENTLY I came across a good example of how cooperation between police and public can help prevent crime. A resident of Ringstead Crescent witnessed a man trying car door handles in the road at about 5.55am one morning. A good description of the man was passed to the police and the offender was found nearby. When police officers searched this man he was found to be in possession of property that had been stolen from a house in an adjacent road. The man is currently in police custody whilst enquiries continue but if you have any information that might help with this investigation you are asked to contact Weymouth Police, quoting crime number 31439. So if you spot anything suspicious give the police a call - it really can make a difference.
MARGARET Sibley reports that the Vice President of the Overcombe WI, Mary Gracie opened the July Meeting by drawing members attention to the sales table and the baby photo competition, then welcomed the speaker for the evening, Abbigail Langstone-Wring, a member of the International Federation of Reflexologists, who gave an interesting and fascinating insight into this area of alternative medicine. Pam Lake proposed a vote of thanks. Diane Berry exhibited the wall hanging for the new Westhaven hospital for members to view over coffee. After coffee Mary Gracie thanked Chris Brackner for organising a very successful birthday meal and those members who helped with the teas at the Sutton Poyntz Street Fayre. Forthcoming events include Tea at Three on Wednesday, 13 August at the home of the President, walking with the Monday walking group and the Bovington Craft Fair on 1 - 5 August at which three members are exhibiting. The next Group Meeting will take place on Monday, 20 October at Wool and requests for tickets for the Sherborne Abbey Carol Service to be made to Anne York at the September Meeting. The next Meeting will be on Monday, 1 September at 7.45pm when Mr. Gordon Bartlett will talk about Music in every home - how it all began'. The sales table theme will be pink and purple and instead of a competition members are asked to bring interesting theatre programmes or any other musical memorabilia. Visitors will be most welcome.
