Biggest display was inside!

DURING Christmas the Littlemoor lights take on a new meaning as you wander around the estate and see all the wonderfully decorated houses, but for one family it's not the outside that counts but the inside.

Wendy Fry, 43, has been collecting indoor Christmas illuminations for over twenty years now and takes over the lounge every Christmas.

The family have to share the space with over 60 snowmen, Santas and other animated items of all sizes and shapes.

Then there are the ornaments, which numbered well over 100 at the last count.

Some were given but most were bought because they were liked.

There is a mixture of electrical and fibre optic amongst the largest of the items with one tin Santa that should seem out of place but fits in well with the rest, and Wendy is still collecting already having added twelve new items last Christmas.

It really looks like a winter wonderland and is so different to all the other houses.

  • There are two very popular events being held at the Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, Lorton Lane during the half term holiday.

  • On Wednesday, February 20 from 10.30am until 2pm there will be a Wildlife Discovery Day (tracks and signs).

This is for children aged 8 - 11 years and the cost is £3 per child.

Why not join in looking for animal tracks and signs and discovering who made them. Children should wear warm outdoor clothing and suitable footwear and bring a packed lunch with them.

If you're aged 12 to 16 years and are feeling left out why not join in with the Young Peoples Work Party (Free) on Thursday, February 21 from 10.30am until 3pm.

This is your chance to make a real difference to your local wildlife, learn new skills and have fun doing practical work on the nature reserve. Tools, gloves and drinks will be supplied but you are advised to wear warm waterproof clothing and suitable footwear and bring your own lunch.

  • On Friday, February 22 from 10.30am until 12.30pm there will be a Caterpillar Kids Day (nature's recyclers).

This is for the younger children, who must be accompanied by an adult and costs £1-50 per child.

This is a chance for them to learn about the creatures which recycle, to collect bugs and make a terrarium for them. Again it is advisable to wear warm outdoor clothing and suitable footwear.

These activities are always popular so it is advisable to book a place in advance by calling Lisa Gravett, People and Wildlife Officer on 01305 816546.

  • Although there was a lot of opposition to the demolition of the garages on Canberra Road to make way for four flats, most people seem to be relieved now that the work has been completed.

The flats certainly look a lot better than the burnt out remains of the garages or the patch of waste ground that was left after the area was cleared.

It's also nice to have the access pathway to the shops open again as I know that several people were struggling going down a slippery grassy slope from Littlemoor Road which was the alternative route.

On the subject of flats, I'm sure that I was told that the old video library was being converted into two flats although by any amount of imagination I can't fathom out how they are going to do it.

If anyone knows or has an inkling please could you let me know!
