Spot a daffodil 'black hole'? Tell us!
SPRING must be just around the corner, or has a mild January lulled Martinstown into a false sense of security?
The daffodils are almost on the point of bursting into flower along the grassy roadside verges throughout the village.
The credit for this is due to the members of the parish council and helpers who carry out the original planting many years ago and continue to in-fill the gaps each year since then.
Should anyone spot one of these black holes' just make a note and pass onto Stephen Slade.
With the retirement of the hardworking husband and wife team of Sue and Mike Clarke, who edited and printed the Valley & Valence Newsletter for many years, it looked as though this wonderful publication would come to an end.
A great pity as this valuable link to all the Winterborne villages and Compton Valence would be lost.
Thankfully someone has come to the rescue. Well done Brian B, who is getting to know the ropes though at first he did think he would be scuppered as he was unable to type.
That has been no problem as most contributors present their material online - except of course for that Luddite who does the village news.
Thank you Brian for coming to the rescue - truly a knight in shining armour.
Many events are in the pipeline for February, with the first of these providing a golden opportunity for a good old fashioned spring clean and refurbishment of house and person.
The Martinstown Cricket Club will be holding a grand jumble sale in the village hall this coming Saturday, February 2, and they will be grateful for any jumble, bric-a-brac, toys books etc.
Contact Mike on 01305 889364 or John on 889345. Alternatively jumble may be taken to the hall on the morning of February 2.
The next session of the Valley View Lunch Club will be held at the usual venue of the Stevens Farm Shop at 12.30pm on Tuesday, February 5.
I gather that pancakes are on the menu, but do not imagine that it will include tossing them.
To book ring Ann on 01305 889383.
Village hall bingo sessions are still as popular as ever and will take place in the village hall at 7.30pm eyes down time on Fridays February 8 and 22.
The Martinstown Brownies are flourishing and at the end of last term finished with an X-Factor-style party, including a variety of talents from singing and dancing to playing instruments.
Congratulations to Millie, who has been presented with her pack leader badge and proved to be a marvellous asset to the unit. Well done indeed.
This term the Brownies will be working for a new badge 'Brownie Skills', which involves packing an overnight bag, reading bus and train timetables in order to plan a journey.
Most importantly they must include a healthy lunch.
Good luck to young leader Sophie, who is so busy working for her exams that she can no longer help on a regular basis.
Anyone with a daughter aged seven to 10 who would like to join this active pack should contact Brown Owl (Lisa Upward) at lisa.u@virgin.net or by snail mail c/o 3 Cromwell Road, Dorchester DTI 2DN.
Mrs Eileen Hobday, the hard working local organiser of Poppy Day Appeal, was delighted that the Dorchester, Martinstown, Abbas and Monkton collection amounted to £21,251.06.
She would like to thank all the collectors and contributors for without their help the vital welfare and benevolent work would be unable to continue.
This seems an opportune moment to thank Eileen herself for all her dedicated hard work which she has done far a great many years.
There is a lot of other support that she also contributes behind the scenes especially to St Martin's church.
Talking of churches it is good to learn that the spire of St Michael's in Steepleton has now been repaired and thanks to all who contributed as individuals which together with various grants enabled the work to go ahead.
